One major milestone for any kid in school is when they can sound out and recognize cvc (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. These include words such as "cat," "fan," "tin," "met," "dot," and "fun."
This is such an importance milestone because it means they are on their way to reading and writing independently. Sounding out and recognizing these words should be continuously and regularly reviewed in a variety of ways until students are quickly able to recognize them by sight without having to sound them out.
There are so many ways to practice these words, worksheets such as fill-in-the-blank, authentically through books, by using flashcards, games such as memory, and by word games such as word searches which students can do independently, in pairs, or in small groups.
I encourage you to grab these cvc word searches, all vowel families included, to have on hand to help students reinforce their cvc word recognition. These are great early finisher activities as well as to give when there is a substitute.
